Beyond Training
Dogs are living, thinking beings—not machines. That’s why no reputable trainer should promise "guaranteed" results. What we do offer is our Certified Results Commitment: lifelong support for the skills and behaviors addressed during your dog’s training program.
At Howl-a-Day Inn, we take a balanced approach to training. Every plan is customized with your dog’s unique personality, history, and your goals in mind. We focus not only on behavior change but also on enrichment, appropriate exercise, and stress management to ensure well-rounded, lasting success.
Our training uses food, toys, and praise strategically to motivate and reinforce desired behaviors. We break down skills into clear, manageable steps so your dog can learn efficiently and confidently. Each program is tailored to your preferences and priorities, and we stay committed to using the most current, science-backed techniques in training and husbandry. We’re here to support you and your dog every step of the way—and we’re excited to help you both thrive.
*Our approach to behavior concerns follows the flow of:
1. Medical/Wellness
2. Lifestyle/Enrichment
3. Management
4. Positive Reinforcement
5. Negative Punishment
6. Negative Reinforcement
7. Positive Punishment
8.Reevaluate behavior concerns and goals; possibly advise a consultation with a behavior veterinarian
Most training plans are successfully completed using positive reinforcement and relationship-based methods. We believe in building trust, confidence, and clear communication with every dog we work with. That said, we also understand that real-world behavior challenges can be complex, and each dog-and-human team is unique.
In specific cases, and only after a thorough assessment, we may consider introducing aversive tools such as prong or electronic collars. These tools are never used by default. We carefully evaluate each situation by considering the dog’s cognitive ability, emotional well-being, the severity and risk of the behavior, the client’s goals and timeline, and the potential for psychological fallout. We are happy to proceed without ever incorporating aversive tools if that’s your preference, and many of our clients choose to stick with positive reinforcement alone.
We never pressure clients into using any training tool. If a situation arises where your goals and timeline may be unrealistic to meet with reward-based methods alone, we will present all available options. This may include adjusting expectations, extending the training timeline, or—only with your consent—incorporating limited, purposeful use of aversive tools. The choice always belongs to you.
Our mission is to help you reach your goals in a way that’s effective, ethical, and tailored to your individual situation. When used, tools like prong or e-collars are introduced with care, transparency, and a full understanding of their purpose and impact. Our priority is and always will be the wellbeing of both you and your dog.
